When a woman whom is pregnant develops high blood glucose or blood sugar but has never had a problem prior to their pregnancy with their sugar count, is called gestational diabetes.
It is proven that four percent of women whom are pregnant suffer from Gestational diabetes.
Some known facts about why this form of diabetes affects pregnant women is that as the baby grows the hormones stop the mother’s insulin from its normal operation. This problem in the mother is called insulin resistance.
The body is unable to make the proper amounts of insulin and or use the proper amounts. Since the glucose is not being used the way it should it gets built up into the blood to very high levels and this is hyperglycemia.
This normally happens in the last trimester of pregnancy, thus not harming the baby as it has already developed. Mothers whom have previously (prior to pregnancy) been diagnoses with diabetes have more of a chance of having a baby with birth defects.
If however you do not treat your gestational diabetes you can do harm to the unborn baby. The extra glucose can be passed thru the placenta to the unborn baby, making the baby’s pancreas work harder and turning the glucose into fat.
Treatment for the gestational diabetes constantly requires meal plans developed for you as well as physical activity. Depending on the level of the gestational diabetes you may also need blood glucose testing and insulin injections.
