A breech presentation (or breech birth) pertains to the babies positing in the uterus, and means that the baby will be delivered buttocks / bottom or feet first as opposed to head first.
In a normal birth the baby will position itself head first toward the birth canal. The breech baby does not and is either feet or buttocks first towards the birth canal. Sometimes the position can be maneuvered by the doctor using manual positioning methods. This usually can be attempted during the end weeks around the 35th week.
Women whom are at risk for having a breech baby are normally women whom have had more then three babies prior to this birth. Also women who have placenta previa, or women and or the fetus that have anomalies.
The way the doctor usually diagnosis the breech baby is they can feel the baby’s bottom around the pelvis area and then they find the baby’s head towards the top part of the abdomen. Women that have had a breech baby say that they felt a sore painful area near their ribs often felt like a ball.
Most of the time if the baby cannot be repositioned to the head first position the doctor will suggest a caesarean section to be sure that no harm is done to the baby or to the pregnant mother.
